Scripture: “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock. But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall. Matthew 7:24-27 NKJV.

Reflection: It wasn’t until the ship’s captain discovered that he was arguing with a lighthouse seaman that he steered his barge 20 degrees to avoid colliding with the lighthouse on shore. He had mistakenly surmised the light from the lighthouse to be another ship. But he changed his course when he realized he was the one who needed to defer. The size and weight of his barge was irrelevant. What mattered was the authority and vantage point of the seaman in the lighthouse. This story opens chapter 16 of Max Lucado’s In the Eye of the Storm.
How often do we react to God this way, insisting that He make the adjustment rather than changing our own course to comply? For our own wellbeing, we must recognize and submit to God. He is our lighthouse, guiding us through the storm. God has made known to us His principles for direction through the Bible.
Regardless of our size, natural strength, ability, prior successes, we cannot choose the best course of direction safely without His guidance. He directs our paths, lights our way, guides us through the storm according to what He knows is best. The lighthouse is securely built on land whereas the barge is in the ocean where it’s dark and tossed about by waves. It needs the lighthouse to avoid hidden dangers.
Prayer: Be Thou my vision, Lord. I lay down my life and vision in surrender to Yours as I face recently developed degeneration of my eye sight. You, Lord, have a purpose for my life and understand what I need going forward. Thank You, Lord, that You provide for all of our needs and that Your ways are always best.
