Scripture: He who believes in Me [who adheres to, trusts in, and relies on Me], as the Scripture has said, “From his innermost being will flow continually rivers of living water.” John 7:38 AMP.
Inspiration Source: In the Eye of the Storm by Max Lucad.
Reflection: This wasn’t what I expected – or planned.
There’s so much in Max Lucado’s The Eye of the Storm about the storms in all our lives, but I found one line that I couldn’t get out of my head. He was talking about the little boy who offered his own small lunch, when what was needed was a way to feed over 5,000 people. He must have known how inadequate it was, how silly it seemed, that people might laugh at such foolishness. Max Lucado’s comment on it really spoke to me: “I think that’s why he didn’t give the lunch to the crowd. Instead he gave it to Jesus.”
So often I hesitate to offer the little bit that I have because it seems so small, or not what is needed. Or am discouraged when what I have to give is swept aside as not what’s wanted. Or disheartened when nothing I do seems to be making any difference. But, as Lucado shows so effectively, God’s perspective is not ours.
This promise gives me hope – that as I look to Jesus and try to follow Him, His rivers of living water flow through me. I don’t know what difference a word of encouragement, a helping hand or a listening ear will make in someone’s life. Large or small, what’s important is that I give it to Him. And how I see myself is not how He sees me.
Prayer: O Father, help me to keep my eyes on you. When I’m discouraged, remind me that you see more than I do. Let me rest in your presence, and let your love flow through me.
