Source of Inspiration: When We Pray Like Jesus by Elisa Morgan
Scripture: For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart. Jeremiah 29:11-13 NKJV.
Reflect: In When We Pray Like Jesus, Elisa Morgan explores the “two-sided coin” of prayer – being truly honest with God about what we want and also being willing to abandon ourselves to God’s bigger vision and better plans.
Growing up in the Church, it seemed very natural to me to deny myself, to think about what others wanted. Learning to be honest with God about my owns dreams and desires was harder. Both parts are necessary for the journey – to follow the path He has for me.
Whenever I think about the ancient monks who followed God out into the desert or across the sea, abandoning themselves fully to His call, a longing has always stirred in my soul, and yet a fear is there, too. If I say I’ll trust fully in Him, might something bad happen? But the words of Jeremiah remind me that what He desires for me is to give me “a future and a hope.” Sometimes God wants to break us out of the comfortable little box we’re in. And sing us out of our prison and into the fullness of who he made us to be.
“‘When you seek me, you will find me, provided you seek for me wholeheartedly; and I will let you find me, says Adonai. Then I will reverse your exile…” Jeremiah 29:13-14a (CJB)
Prayer: O Father, help me to see you as you are, to come to you with all of my heart. Remind me that the way I see myself is not the way that you see me, that I can trust you with my fears and my follies. That you listen with love and understanding. And that you call me onward to find more and more of you! Amen.
