A blended photograph image depicts a violent storm like the one John Newton experienced. Like him, we’ve all felt tossed and torn and in need of God’s mercy.

Medium: Oil on 16 X 20” Canvas.
Scripture: 2 Corinthians 9:8 (KJV) “And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work.”
Inspired by: Amazing Grace, Inspiring Hymn Stories for Daily Devotions, by Kenneth W. Osbeck/Hymn: “Amazing Grace” by John Newton.
Reflection: I wanted to create something centered around the hymn called “Amazing Grace.” John Newton, the composer and a slave trader who called himself a “wretch” in the song, nearly died in a violent storm in 1748. Awestruck in fear, he fell to his knees and begged God for mercy. Having experienced a genuine conversion to Christianity, Newton became an ordained minister and wrote the hymn “Amazing Grace.”
Researching ideas for a painting, I found a video about this very event. During the video, I caught a glimpse of photographs crossfading as praying hands emerged from a storm scene. The blended image inspired me to depict a ship being tossed in a violent storm along with praying hands. Someday, I hope to complete a painting similar to the original photograph I captured. Shortly before his death in 1807, John Newton exclaimed, “I am a great sinner and Christ is a great Savior!”
