Title: The Invitation.
Artist: Debbie Gustafson.
Medium: Watercolor.
Inspired by: The Uncluttered Heart by Beth A. Richardson.
Scripture: Restore us, O Lord God of hosts, let your face shine, that we may be saved. Psalm 80:19. ESV (See also Isaiah 9:2, 6-7.) (Pg. 63 of the book referenced below.)
Reflect: “The Invitation” is a painting emphasizing the restoration that the advent season prepares us for. In the book, The Uncluttered Heart by Beth A. Richardson, the author guides us devotionally through the weeks of Advent.
In this painting, I represented Advent with the four colored candles that burn brightly with wax melting as they burn. They are not the eternal light, though. That light comes from the white candle which burns brightly, remaining fully lit without affecting the candle itself. This represents Jesus given to humanity. The hand, disfigured and aged from separation, represents humanity. The swirling light indicates points of revelation that throughout time God had shed on the greater light. Each human heart (hand) yearns for all God offers through Jesus. It reaches up to take hold of the love and restoration being offered by God.
Prayer: Let not the Advent wreath be only a decoration, but an invitation to full restoration to God our Father, the Initiator of reconciliation and restoration, our Creator, our Source of fulfillment, our Source of hope, peace, joy and love.
God, please remove the distractions that tear my heart from you. In the days before me, let me glory in you, let me reflect your love, let me point to your initiatives of restoration. Open my eyes to see you clearly and celebrate the magnificent gift of Jesus, the Light of the world. Thank You.
