Scripture: Joshua 1:9 NIV “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
Faith Statement: There are plenty of verses in the Bible that talk about God being with us. But there are few that struck me as much as Joshua 1:9. “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua was commanded to be strong and courageous. He was instructed to draw his strength from the Lord and not upon his own brawn, because had he done so, he would have failed. I wanted to create a piece that simultaneously portrayed the feeling of being lonely and being seen. While this theme is more obvious, the deeper meaning depicts the very moment this commandment was spoken; the mix of worry and realization that is evident on the subject’s face.
As I go into college and leave my childhood behind, I have continually held the fear that I would be alone in the world. I tried to represent this by the vague and uniform nature of the surrounding crowd. But despite those worries, I have learned to lean into the Lord and not rely on my own perceived strength. While God is with all of us, He also sees us as individuals. He has numbered the hairs on our head. The intense focus on the centered individual attempts to portray this personal relationship between the subject and the viewer. Even though sometimes it can feel like we’re alone in the world, that is not at all how he sees it.
