What do we learn about following Jesus from one of His most important ancestors, Boaz, the grandfather of King David?
By Debbie Gustafson, based on the Book of Ruth.
Reflection: I wanted to step into the sandals of Boaz, the Kinsman Redeemer from the book of Ruth. He focused on living for God, caring about people, protecting the righteous, and he respected and followed authority throughout his life, most notably regarding his decisions, especially when he chose to marry Ruth. Thus, his righteous character, obedience, and love gave birth to the biblical lineage of Jesus Christ through Obed, the son Ruth.
My work has eight glimpses, artistic vignettes, of Boaz’s story;
- Ruth embraces the God of Naomi.
- Boaz displays his reverence for God.
- Boaz acknowledges Ruth’s character.
- Naomi and Ruth seek God’s will.
- Ruth steps out in faith.
- Boaz legally accepts the role of Kinsman Redeemer.
- Boaz and Ruth marry.
- Obed is born and continues the lineage of Jesus.
I hope that viewers will let these eight images speak to them about the beauty of this remarkable love story. I want people to see how the dignity of Boaz shines through the narrative as does the courageous devotion of his non-Jewish bride whose famous words still inspire us today, “Where you go, I will follow.”
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, I thank you for directing my attention to your servant Boaz. May I recognize the character of godly men you have placed in my life. Thank you for the commitment they have to you and the godly influence they have in my life. Amen.
