We all tend to put a lot of pressure on ourselves, thinking we’re never enough and that God expects us to be better, or wiser, more giving, or fruitful. But we can change how we think and be changed by how God teaches us to think.
By Diane Tobolt, based on Romans 12:2 (NIV): Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Reflection: We put a lot of pressure on ourselves. Our minds barrage us with things we think we should be, things we should do, and so many needs that clamor for our attention. It’s so easy to feel that we’re never enough and that God expects us to be better, wiser, more giving, or more fruitful. But these are thought patterns of the world and not the will of God for us.
So how do we resist conforming to the thought patterns of the world? How can we renew our mind and be transformed?
The Amplified Bible notes that the word “transformed” is from the Greek word meaning “metamorphosis”, that it “refers to the process that leads to an outward, permanent change.” Just as a caterpillar doesn’t become a butterfly by trying really, really hard; so we can’t take on the mind of Christ by driving ourselves to be better. It is only by spending time with Him that we start to see people through His eyes, react with His compassion, reach out with His grace. Taking the time to be with Him not only refreshes our own soul, but it is also the way to allow His love to flow out into a hurting world.
Jesus is the One Who transforms us. In John 15:4-5, He says, “Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” (NIV)
Prayer: O Father, I’m so easily distracted. My heart longs to spend time with you, but somehow there’s always other things that need to be done. Whether in times of worship, or prayer, or just sharing a moment of joy, lead me to the still waters that restore my soul!
