Every time I feel “stuck” in old patterns of life, God teaches me new ways to see things and draw closer to Him. As I look afresh at the ordinaries of life, He shows me more and more how much He loves me individually.
By Charlotte Laxen Helfritz, based on Revelation 21:5 and Discovering God Through the Arts by Terry Glaspey
Discovering God Through the Arts has really opened my eyes to seeing God in new ways. The author, Terry Glaspey, showed me great works of art, writing and poetry, both old and new, in a fresh way that I now bring into my worship and quiet time with the Lord. My artwork has become more colorful and spontaneous and meaningful as a result.
This painting was inspired by a poem “The Red Wheelbarrow” published in 1938 by William Carlos Williams. It was mentioned in Glaspey’s book to remind us how to notice the simple beauties all around us. The author says, “Ordinary things have extraordinary things to tell us.” In this simple, short poem, Williams speaks of a red wheelbarrow, white chickens and rain. The style of the poem was new and direction changing for its time.
The Scriptural basis for my art is Revelation 21:5, Then He who sat on throne said, “Behold, I make all things new.” And he told me “Write this down, for these words are true and faithful.” (NKJV) This Scripture came alive as I allowed myself to create with a newness from words of old. By grace and with greater attention, I notice the wonders of simple beauties in my everyday life.
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of seeing the ordinary in new ways that show me your plan in my life. Thank you for teaching me how you show up in surprising ways and make all things new. You are amazing every day as I seek to know you better. Amen.
