A plant that came from my grandmother’s farm taught me something new about God’s love. But I needed to take time to see and appreciate it first.
By Diane Tobolt, based on Luke 12:27-28 and Discovering God Through the Arts by Terry Glaspey
Scripture: Luke 12:27-28 Consider the lilies, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. If then God so clothes the grass, which today is in the field and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will He clothe you, O you of little faith?
My art started with a photo of a peony in my garden. The plant came from my Grandmother’s farm and reminded me of all my visits there while growing up. When the peonies began to flourish, I was delighted and.enjoyed them despite their all too brief blooming season.
One of the things that struck me in the book Discovering God through the Arts is how the author encourages us take the time to seek and appreciate beauty, to look for it even in the everyday things in our lives, and pay attention when we find it. One year my parents and I went down to Nerstrand Big Woods State Park in the spring to see the carpets of wildflowers spread out on the forest floor, their colors bright against the green foliage. But we had to be quick, grab the opportunity when it was there, because they didn’t last long.
Flowers have inspired artists through the ages, and through those art works, their ageless beauty continues to enrich our lives today. Whether painted in watercolor or oils, on silk or porcelain, a child’s first painting or a scientist’s botanical illustration, flowers in art bring joy to our lives.
In Luke 12:27-28, Jesus uses flowers to illustrate God’s love and care for his people. Flowers may seem to be of very little importance in the scheme of things, since they last only a few days or weeks before they wither and die. And yet they are an explosion of different colors and shapes, brightening the roadsides or scenting the night, growing in wild profusion or carefully tended. They speak to us of the abundance and exuberance of God’s love and the care that he has for us.
Prayer: O Father, remind me to pay attention. In the business of life to enjoy the wildflowers along the way, to be present for precious moments with family and friends, and to learn to rest in your care for me. Amen.
