When Christ was born, the shepherds in the field most likely thought it would be a normal night while doing work as usual. But it wasn’t to be a normal night for them, and their lives would change forever.

Scripture: Luke 2:8-11 “And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An Angel of the Lord appears to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said unto them, ‘Do not be afraid, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all people. ’ Today in the town of David, a Saviour has been born for you, he is Christ, the Lord.”
Scripture: Luke 2:15 “When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, ‘Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord told us about.’”
When Christ was born, the shepherds in the field most likely thought it would be a normal night while doing work as usual. But it wasn’t to be a normal night for them, for the Glory of the Lord and the Angel of the Lord appeared to them with God’s redemptive message. Luke 2:14 tells us after the Angel of the Lord spoke, there was a multitude of the heavenly host suddenly appearing proclaiming Glory to God. After the heavenly host left, the shepherds, who at first were very frightened, took action and went to find Jesus in Bethlehem. There they told all they had witnessed with their eyes and that which had been spoken to them. When leaving Bethlehem, Luke: 2:20 says: “The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.”
As the shepherds lived out their future days, how astounded they must have felt that they had a part in the birth of Jesus coming in human form to earth! They must have marveled that they actually witnessed such a glorious scene of the Glory of God. This painting represents the touch and holy Light of God falling upon the Shepherds at the birth of Jesus.
Prayer: God, our Father, it is with such deep gratitude we come to you! In thankfulness, we praise You for our salvation and fellowship with You that was given through the birth, life, death, and resurrection of your Son, Jesus Christ. The shepherds told everyone they knew of His great and glorious birth event. May we likewise tell others all we know of Christ and His saving power as we live our lives giving glory and honor to You. Amen.
