Scripture: Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you your heart’s desires. Commit everything you do to the LORD. Trust him, and he will help you. He will make your innocence radiate like the dawn, and the justice of your cause will shine like the noonday sun. Psalm 37:4-6 NLT.
Source of Inspiration: One Thousand Gifts by Ann Voskamp.
Reflect: “Ready or not, here I come!” called out 2022. As I cut into an onion one evening, I found a large bad spot that began at the bottom and penetrated upwards into the heart of the onion. I cut further and discovered I could salvage a good portion. Then I diced some for dinner and put the other chunks in a container to store in the fridge. Last year, 2021 started out poorly, just like the onion. Looking back, I see a change.
In her book, One Thousand Gifts, Ann Voskamp intimately and captivatingly describes her journey from despair to hope. As she began to look for and write down simple blessings and gratitudes, she found delight in her everyday life as a homeschool mom and farmer’s wife. Inspired by Ann, I turned a little dollar store journal into a diary of thanksgiving. The “Hide and Seek” game became a choice to note my gratitudes instead of dwelling in fear and unbelief.
As I counted my blessings in 2021, they outweighed the negatives. Ann’s simple joy when she saw rainbow colors in soap bubbles, heard the pitter patter of rain drops, and smelled the fragrance of baking bread reminded me of a photo of my granddaughter as a toddler. Painting Simple Pleasures, I revisited the overarching theme of childlike faith expressed in One Thousand Gifts. It also reminded me of beautiful Scripture verses from Matthew 18:3-4, “. . . unless you turn from your sins and become like little children, you will never get into the Kingdom of Heaven. So anyone who becomes as humble as this little child is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven.”
Prayer: Heavenly Father, as I navigate challenges of life, help me maintain a childlike faith that delights in the security of your love and power. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
