Scripture: But the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith. Galatians 5:22.
Source of Inspiration: When We Pray Like Jesus by Elisa Morgan.
Reflect: Elisa Morgan’s book, When we Pray Like Jesus, focuses on His time in the Garden of Gethsemane, where He prays “Father, if Thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not My will, but Thine, be done.” (Luke 22:42) Jesus knew He had a distinct purpose in coming to earth and that His death would bring salvation to those who believe in Him. But He also knew the deep agony He was facing and must have felt a great need to pray to the Father.
Elisa Morgan likens Jesus’s prayer to a two-sided coin–a prayer with two perspectives, one divine and the other human. Like Jesus, we, too, can struggle in prayer with what we want and what God wants. This picture, “Struggle of the Will,” shows a man with inner tension as he wrestles between his own will and God’s. In the picture, he turns toward God to do God’s will while, behind him, his own will is shown to be darker and not so calm. Ahead of him, as he walks in the Will of God, the view is brighter; not that the man will not have difficulties, but the Holy Spirit dwelling within him will be with him to strengthen and give guidance.
Similarly, we are human with our weaknesses and faults, and the pull of selfish desires can beckon us away from God. The other side of the coin, though, turning to and walking in the the Will of God, will bring greater inner hope, love, forgiveness and peace to our soul. And the fruit of the spirit will abound in us bringing about a life-well lived for the Lord.
Prayer: Lord, we thank you that you came to redeem us and die on the cross that we might have forgiveness of our sins and become followers of you. Help us to make choices that are in your will so that our life will bring honor and glory to you. Amen.
