Reflect: Rest. How could I do that when my mind was dashing forward in the wee hours of the morning? After only four hours of sleep, my overactive brain awakened me several nights in a row. I had recently made a financial commitment, and I kept stewing over it. Such things have a way of robbing us of peace that God wants us to have not just at night, but both day and night.
Learning what true rest is has a been a lifelong pursuit for me. Thankfully, I am closer to mastering it than I was several decades ago.
Rest is a choice–physically, emotionally and spiritually. Physical rest includes not only sleep but also resting from continuous busyness, fidgeting, working on the never ending to do list, and multitasking. Mental and emotional rest includes stopping the incessant habit of trying to figure everything out, needless problem solving triggered by “what if…?”, worrying, over-planning, fearing, and seeking perfection in every sphere of life.
As I rest spiritually in the Holy Spirit, the benefit trickles into other areas of my life. I can choose to slow down and take time to meditate on God’s word to allow it to work into the very fibers of my being. In this posture, I discover how age-old truths from a time when apples only grew on trees, apply to now when Apple also refers to manufactured devices. By daily moment-by-moment choices to rest spiritually, I change my thought processes as well as avoid those predawn sleepless hours.
Pray: Lord, I want to grow in the knowledge of You so that Your peace reigns inexplicably in my heart. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
