Scripture: “We love him, because he first loved us.” I John 4:19 KJV
Source of Inspiration: Amazing Grace by Kenneth W. Osbeck/Hymn: “O How I Love Jesus”
Reflect: Painting this picture reminded me of a woman in my family history whose husband died, leaving her with young children (one, still a baby) to raise and provide for. This happened in the 1800s, and times were tough. Throughout all generations, many people with similar stories can relate, because they’ve had to trust God for a victory that is only found in His faithfulness and their love and belief in Him.
This painting represents a woman looking to her Savior, Jesus Christ, thankful for the love of God towards her, and not only in joyful times, but also through her struggles and grief. The hymn “O How I Love Jesus” is based on the above Bible verse and the chorus proclaims: “O how I love Jesus because he first loved me.” The Bible tells us of God’s love, and how He sent His Son Jesus Christ to earth that we might become part of His heavenly kingdom, receive His love and truth, and respond to it.
Frederick Whitfield, a clergyman, in the 1800s authored this hymn, and it is included in many hymnals. One of the verses that comforts those in sorrow with a hurting heart is: ”It tells of One whose loving heart can feel my deepest woe, who in each sorrow bears a part that none can bear below.”
Generation upon generation has had sorrows, struggles, and woes, and this hymn speaks to all. Although conditions and circumstances may be different, the human heart and its desire for relationship with God is not. “O How I Love Jesus” is timeless, as we look to Jesus with thankfulness and love. Mr. Whitfield wrote that the name of Jesus was the “sweetest name on earth.”
It is still the sweetest name on earth.
Prayer: Lord, thank you for past generations who were your followers and expressed it in song and words. Help us to be faithful to do our part in telling others of your great love. Our hearts are eternally grateful that through Jesus Christ, we are able to live a life founded upon you.
