Scripture: “But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us. We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair.” 2 Corinthians 4:7-8 NLT.
Source of Inspiration: Amazing Grace by Kenneth W. Osbeck/Hymn: Have Thine Own Way, Lord.
Reflect: Riding a train in India, I carefully removed the foil cover from a chilled clay pot to discover plain yogurt inside. I don’t recall ever enjoying yogurt more. The pot was plain, without a glaze, enhancing the yogurt with a subtle, earthy flavor.
After carefully forming a pot, its creator bisque fires it in a hot kiln to make it solid and hard. To beautify, add color, and make it non porous, the potter adds glaze and returns it to the kiln for a higher temperature firing process. The prophet Isaiah describes God as the Potter in chapter 29, and in 41 he quotes God, “I will strengthen and harden you to difficulties…” Isaiah 41:10 AMPC
Our Creator designs, forms and, yes, fires us into vessels for His purposes. We endure testing and trial as He forms us the way He desires. Each of us is unique, even when coordinated with others as a group. I think of my friend’s dishes that she and her daughter made. Although not identical, the dishes work well together.
I have pottery for many purposes–mugs, bowls, a platter, vases, pitchers, a skillet, planters, and unglazed terra cotta pots. Sizes vary as well. I won’t attempt to drink coffee out of a plant pot with a hole in the bottom. Likewise, I won’t plant a geranium on my flat platter. I’m grateful for the variety meeting multiple needs.
Pray: Lord, thank You that You created me uniquely for a certain purpose on earth. Thank You that the trials are refining fires, used to bring glory to Your name. Help me endure this process with Your grace and in Your mercy. Amen.
