Artist: Cheryl Barr.
Title: Uncluttered.
Media: Watercolor on cotton paper.
Scripture: Jesus called the children to him and said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.” Luke 18:16 NIV
Inspired by: The Uncluttered Heart by Beth A. Richardson.
Reflection: Our living room bugged me. Yes, it looked lived in, but wasn’t restful. I felt like its clutter reflected the state of my heart. Art on the walls, items on horizontal surfaces, dated furniture were random and mismatched.
Reading The Uncluttered Heart advent devotional by Beth Richardson, I sensed that I was to focus on simplifying and prioritizing during this Advent season. New furniture is not in our budget, but I could attack the clutter problem. First, I removed all photos from frames and put into an album. That was a big step forward. Next I moved a small table, put away a fold up table, and transferred some books upstairs. I relocated a few pieces of art in other places in the house. Then I selected paintings from my stash which color coordinate with the carpet and furnishings. A few days later, my eighteen year old grandson rewarded my efforts. “You did something new in here, Nana. It looks really nice!”
A photo of my infant great grand daughter inspired this painting about The Uncluttered Heart. Her little head isn’t full of worries, perplexities, and to-do lists. Oh, to be like that again!
Prayer: Lord, help me to eliminate all the excess in my life so that I can focus on You and Your intentions for me. Declutter and cleanse my heart so that I can see You at work around me and within. Help me see past my distractions, removing those from within which interfere with Your life in me. Be Thou my Vision. Help me decrease so that You increase in my life. Amen.
